What Causes Abnormal Clearance in CAT Injector Needle Valve Assemblies?
The needle valve and nozzle body form an ultra-precision component with a typical factory clearance of just 0.0015–0.003 mm.When clearance becomes abnormal due to wear, injectors leak, lose pressure, and fail to perform.
1. Abrasive Wear
Hard particles in fuel create microcutting and scoring on the guide surface. This gradually widens the clearance, especially under high common-rail pressure up to 2600 bar.
2. Adhesive Wear (Scuffing and Seizure)
High temperatures and insufficient lubrication break down the fuel film.Metaltometal contact causes tearing, galling, and uneven clearance.
3. Fatigue Wear
Repeated impact on the sealing cone leads to microcracks, pitting, and spalling. This destroys the sealing band and distorts the original fit.
4. Corrosive Wear
Sulfur, moisture, and acids in lowquality fuel corrode the precision surfaces.Corrosion pores expand under mechanical stress and increase clearance.
